Are Shipping Containers Secure? What You Should Do to Protect What’s Inside
20 May 2026
When you are looking for shipping containers for sale or considering a short term container hire, the number one question on your mind is usually: “Will my stuff actually be safe?” Whether you’re storing expensive agricultural equipment on a farm, or holding retail stock in a commercial yard, container security is the cornerstone of your peace of mind.
Here is everything you need to know about keeping your assets under lock and key.
The Foundation: Base Security Features
Out of the box, a shipping container is a formidable opponent for any opportunist. Made of high-grade Corten steel, the walls are designed to withstand the crushing weight of a sea voyage - which means they aren't easily breached by hand tools.
Key built-in security features include:
Heavy Duty Doors – Fitted with locking bars and cam-and-keeper systems that pull the doors tightly into the frame.
Rubber Seals – Designed for weatherproofing, but they also make it very difficult to force a pry bar between the doors.
Essential Security Upgrades
While the base unit is strong, "standard" isn't always enough for high-value items like power tools or vehicles. Most of our shipping container customers in Suffolk opt for these key upgrades:
- The Lock Box: This is the single most important security feature. A steel shroud is welded over the padlock area, preventing bolt cutters or grinders from reaching the lock itself.
- High Security Padlocks: Not all locks are created equal. We recommend Shutter Padlocks or "Block" locks. These have a hidden shackle that fits perfectly inside a lock box, leaving no room for a saw to get to work.
- External Lighting: It sounds simple, but a well lit exterior (perhaps on a PIR sensor) prevents "blind spots" where someone could hide. If you don’t have a power source nearby, solar lighting may be a good solution.
When Does Security Matter Most?
The level of container security you need often depends on what is inside. We see three main categories where "extra secure" is the only way to go:
- Tools & Construction Gear: High theft items that are easy to resell. If you are using a container for tool storage, a lock box is non negotiable. Consider CCTV coverage as an added layer of protection.
- Retail Stock: If your container holds inventory for a business, the financial blow of a break in includes lost revenue and insurance hikes.
- Sensitive Equipment & Documents: Containers used to store important equipment, electronics, or business records should have enhanced security, as the cost of replacement or the disruption caused by loss can be significant.
Hire vs. Buy: Security Considerations
There is a slight difference in how security is approached depending on whether you hire or buy your container.
When you hire from Secure Stores, units are supplied with a lock box fitted as standard, so you only need to provide a high-quality padlock. Because the container remains the property of the hire company, permanent modifications such as welding or bolting additional security fixtures usually require permission.
When you purchase a container, you have complete flexibility. Owning the unit allows you to install shelving, partitions, lighting, alarms, or even secure safes inside, creating a highly protected storage space tailored to your business needs.
Pro Tips: Positioning for Protection
Sometimes, the best security is how you place the unit on your land.
- Face the Wall: If you aren't using the container every day, position the doors close to a permanent wall or another container. If a thief can't get a vehicle or large tools in front of the doors, this will make it harder for them to get in.
- The "V" Formation: If you have multiple units, park them in a "V" or "U" shape to create a private, central courtyard that is easier to monitor with a single CCTV camera.
- Visibility: While it’s tempting to hide a container behind a barn, keeping it in a well lit area with clear lines of sight from your main building is a much stronger deterrent.
Whilst you can’t prevent someone really determined from gaining access to a container with the right tools and equipment, you can make it more time consuming and noisy, and cover the area with CCTV.
