Self storage packing tips: How to organise your self storage container
10 February 2022
Shipping containers offer an affordable way to store your belongings. Plus, they’re incredibly secure – it’s almost impossible for thieves to break through 2-tonnes of Corten steel!
But organisation is key. There are few things more frustrating than having to empty out your entire self storage container to get to something at the back.
Whether you’re a business owner storing excess stock or a sports fanatic housing a prized collection of retro golf clubs, here are our self storage packing tips.
Keep an inventory
Above all, we suggest keeping an up-to-date inventory of everything inside your self storage container. You don’t want to waste time pulling everything out only to realise what you were looking for wasn’t in there to begin with!
If you frequently add and remove items, a digital copy may work best. Perhaps try using the notes app on your smartphone.
Leave space to move
This is another important one: leave a passageway to allow access to items at the back of your container. This will save you having to reshuffle everything.
You might also want to invest in racking. This can be a great way to maximise space while ensuring you can reach all four corners of your storage unit. We stock a range of container accessories at competitive prices.
Distribute weight
When stacking boxes, make sure to put the heaviest ones at the bottom. This prevents the stack tipping over, protecting both you and your belongings.
Pack smart
Think strategically how you pack your container. It makes sense to store the items you use most frequently at the front so they are convenient to grab.
Label boxes
You might remember what’s in each box now but chances are over time you’ll forget. So go wild with that permanent marker and don’t forget to label every single box.
Another top tip? Make sure the labels are facing outwards. Labelling your boxes is pointless if you can’t see them!
Don’t store anything wet
It’s important to ensure everything you put in your storage container is clean and dry. While shipping containers are fantastic at keeping the weather out, condensation can become an issue if you store a lot of damp goods.
Let your container breathe
Our containers come fitted with extra air vents as standard. This increases air circulation and reduces the risk of condensation.
Leaving a small gap between your possessions and the container walls also boosts air circulation. Just a finger’s width should do the trick.
Invest in lighting
Standard containers only have one set of doors so it can be a little dark towards the back, particularly in larger units. LED lighting can be a real help, especially in the winter.
Dismantle furniture
If you’re running low on space, it might be wise to dismantle items of furniture like chairs and tables. They’ll take up a lot less room this way.
Use top quality shipping containers
Not all shipping containers are created equal and, as a rule of thumb, if a box is really cheap, chances are the quality is really crap. At Secure Stores Nationwide, we guarantee every container is structurally sound and watertight. Plus, our new containers are specifically designed for self storage with user-friendly design and safety features as standard like waist-height door handles.
