Temperature Build Up
On a sunny 25°C day, the internal temperature of an unshaded, unventilated shipping container can quickly exceed 40°C to 50°C. This extreme heat build up can warp plastics, degrade electronics, melt adhesives, and ruin sensitive stock like liquids, pharmaceuticals, or foodstuffs.

The Condensation Trap (Container Rain)
It sounds counterintuitive, but hot weather can actually increase the risk of moisture damage. This happens due to large temperature swings between day and night and is most common in winter/spring, when you often get very cold nights and then strong sunlight beaming down from first thing in the morning:

  1. At night: As the outside air rapidly cools down, the steel walls drop in temperature.
  2. In the morning: The intense sun heats the container, causing any residual moisture in the air, wooden pallets, or cardboard boxes to evaporate into the air.
  3. The result: The moisture heavy warm air inside hits the cold steel ceiling, condensing into droplets. This is known in the industry as "container rain," and it can lead to mould, rust, and damp cardboard.

Practical Solutions for Summer Protection

Fortunately, preventing heat and moisture damage is entirely manageable with a few proactive adjustments.

1. Prioritise Container Ventilation
Airflow is a defence against both heat build up and condensation. Proper container ventilation allows trapped, hot air to escape and keeps internal temperatures closer to ambient outside temperatures.

  • Ensure your container’s built in passive vents are completely clear of debris or cobwebs.
  • If you are storing heat sensitive items long term, consider asking our team about installing additional louvre vents or mechanical extraction fans to actively pull fresh air through the space.

2. Consider Insulation or Condensation Prevention Products

  • Insulate your Container: Insulation doesn’t only work to keep spaces warmer, it also works to block out some heat in a container, and will stop the internal temperature from rising as high. Reducing the fluctuations in temperature internally will also prevent condensation. 
  • Utilise Moisture Absorbers: For peace of mind against container rain, hang moisture absorbing poles or place desiccant bags inside the unit. These act like industrial grade silica gel packets, trapping airborne moisture before it can condense on your ceiling.
  • Treat your Ceiling: There is a product called ‘Grafotherm’ which can be applied to the ceiling of containers. Whenever dew point is reached on the surface coated, condensation will form and this will immediately be absorbed by the coating. 

3. Strategic Positioning on Site
Where you choose to place your container on your property makes a massive difference:

  • Seek Shade: If possible, position your container where it will receive natural shade during the hottest parts of the day (early to mid afternoon) - such as near a building line or established trees. Just ensure overhanging branches don't block delivery access!
  • Align with the Wind: Positioning the container so that prevailing summer breezes blow against the side with the vents will naturally boost passive airflow inside.

4. Know What NOT to Store in the Heat
Some items simply cannot handle extreme summer temperatures. Unless you have a specialised temperature controlled unit, avoid storing:

  • Compressed gas canisters or aerosol cans (which can expand and burst).
  • Flammable liquids or volatile chemicals.
  • Perishable food items or heat sensitive wines and spirits.
  • High end electronics or old photograph collections that aren't sealed in climate safe boxes.

Best Practices for Summer Storage

To give your goods the highest level of storage protection, you could also incorporate these habits into your summer routine:

  • Leave an Air Gap: When packing your container, never stack boxes tightly right up to the ceiling or flush against the steel walls. Leave a gap of at least a few inches around the perimeter and at the top to allow air to circulate freely.
  • Air your container: If you are on close by (for security reasons), you could open the container doors for a period to allow air to circulate and the temperature inside your container to cool.
