Peewit Caravan Park

The Challenge

Our client owns and operates a touring and static caravan park in Suffolk. Set in 13 acres of tree lined and landscaped parkland the site has welcomed touring and static caravans since 1965.

One of the site’s toilet and shower blocks for customers was becoming rather dilapidated. The building itself was ageing and to repair it and re fit the interior was going to be too expensive.

The Solution

Instead of demolishing the existing building and starting from scratch with a traditional build, our client decided to repurpose several containers instead. Given that the site is located in Felixstowe, home to the UK’s largest container port, this approach also serves as a nod to what Felixstowe is best known for.

With shipping containers being 8ft wide as standard, we realised that once lined and insulated, the space inside each shower room would be slightly narrow, so it was decided that we would fabricate new units from scratch in the UK, 10m long x 3m wide to give some extra room.

The client wanted three units in total – a male shower and WC block, a female shower and WC block, and a third unit with sinks for tourers to wash up pots and pans, along with a storage room for staff to keep cleaning equipment in.

We also had a special request for a canopy at the entrance, fitted with hooks for hanging baskets!

The Benefit

Just as with a building, the client was able to select their preferred fixtures and fittings, and high quality wet room boarding to ensure that what was installed was suitable for heavy usage by customers on a daily basis.

Limited groundworks were required since containers are self supporting (you just need to support the four corners). These units could also in theory be picked up at a later date and moved should the client wish to.

Overall, the facilities worked out a lot cheaper than building the equivalent from traditional bricks and mortar.
